Swiss renewable energy producer Axpo Holding AG announced on Tuesday the acquisition of a biogas plant in Poland, with plans to expand its biogas projects within the country.
The company acquired the facility in October from private shareholders and intends to renovate it to meet its operational standards.
Located in Western Pomerania, the plant has been operational since late 2020 and generates approximately 6,640 MWh of electricity annually by processing around 20,000 tonnes of agricultural substrates, primarily agricultural waste.
The electricity produced is integrated into Axpo's green energy portfolio, while the byproduct, organic fertilizer, is utilized by local farmers.
Veronique Abrate, head of Biogas International at Axpo, highlighted Poland as an emerging market for biogas development, stating that the group is eager to explore additional projects in this sector. She noted that renewable gas plays a crucial role in decarbonizing the agricultural sector and advancing the energy transition.
Axpo has extensive experience operating biomass and biogas facilities, managing 15 plants in Switzerland, as well as a facility in Spain.
The company has recently expanded its operations in Portugal and Italy. With over 20 years in the Polish market, Axpo sources renewable energy for sale to local businesses and is also involved in developing photovoltaic projects and energy storage solutions in the region.
