German clean energy developer Viridi RE GmbH has obtained an environmental permit for its SolWinHy Cadiz project, located in Andalusia, Spain. The facilities in Arcos de la Frontera will produce green hydrogen and methanol using power from on-site wind and solar farms, operating entirely off-grid.
The project includes a 54-MW wind farm and a 165-MWp solar photovoltaic plant, which together will generate 386 GWh of electricity annually.
This will enable the production of 5,500 tonnes of electrolytic hydrogen, which, when combined with biogenic CO2, will result in 29,000 tonnes of green methanol each year.
To ensure continuous operation, the project will incorporate batteries and a thermal energy storage (TES) system using crushed rocks. Israel's Brenmiller Energy Ltd's bGen TES, with a capacity of at least 55 MWh, has been selected as the preferred energy storage solution for the site.
This milestone brings Viridi RE a step closer to advancing sustainable energy production in the region.
