The European Commission has announced the approval of over EUR 380 million (USD 412.2 million) to support 133 new green transition projects across Europe. This funding is part of the LIFE Programme, the EU's dedicated financial instrument for environmental and climate action.
The allocated amount represents more than half of the total EUR 574 million required for these projects, with the remainder to be funded by national, regional, and local governments, public-private partnerships, businesses, and civil society organizations.
The EU's financing breakdown includes EUR 62 million for climate resilience and mitigation efforts, EUR 99 million aimed at governance and market solutions to expedite the clean energy transition, EUR 144.5 million for nature and biodiversity initiatives, and EUR 74 million for projects that promote a circular economy and enhance quality of life.
Among the funded projects are several hydrogen-related initiatives, including the establishment of Greece's first green hydrogen refuelling station and the development of a method by recycler Befesa to convert residual gases from aluminum recycling into high-purity hydrogen. Additionally, Salzgitter Mannesmann Stainless Tubes Italia plans to implement a process for decarbonising steel production through hydrogen recovery and reuse.
