Türkiye has set ambitious goals to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity production to 47.8% by 2025, according to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources' 2025 budget proposal. The plan involves expanding the country's capacity in solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal energy, building on the progress already made across these sectors.
A key priority is reducing reliance on imported natural gas, with the ministry aiming to lower its contribution to electricity production to 18.9% by 2025. Simultaneously, the share of domestic energy sources is targeted to reach 59.4%, up from 42.7% in 2023.
Türkiye's strategy also focuses on improving energy security and efficiency. This includes efforts to reduce transmission and distribution losses in the electricity network and boost natural gas storage capacity. Energy efficiency initiatives, such as installing LED lighting in public spaces, are also planned to help reduce the carbon footprint of the electricity sector.
These efforts are part of a broader plan to diversify Türkiye's energy sources, enhance domestic energy production, and move towards a more sustainable energy future.
