Ohmium International announced that its modular proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser technology has been chosen by SwitcH2 BV for a project aimed at constructing a 300-MW offshore floating green hydrogen and ammonia synthesis station off the Southern European coast.
According to the term sheet signed by the companies, Ohmium's systems will be integrated into SwitcH2's 268-meter (879-foot) floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel. The electrolyser will harness nearshore solar and wind energy, along with treated seawater, to produce green hydrogen.
Once operational, the floating station is projected to generate up to 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will be directed to an on-deck ammonia synthesis unit, which aims for a production target of nearly 300,000 tonnes per year, subsequently offloaded onto an ammonia carrier for distribution to customers. The facility is expected to commence operations by 2029.
SwitcH2, a renewable energy joint venture between BW Offshore and Oceans Capital, secured a EUR 4 million (USD 4.35 million) grant from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) in 2022 for Project OFFSET. This four-year program aims to advance specific technologies within the FPSO, including the direct utilization of seawater in the electrolysis process. In August 2023, SwitcH2 further engaged German engineering company Thyssenkrupp to contribute to Project OFFSET.
