German steel producer GMH Gruppe has secured a renewable electricity supply agreement with French utility Engie's local unit to power its tempering plant in Georgsmarienhuette.
The plant, which previously relied on natural gas, will now run entirely on green energy sourced from a solar plant and an unsubsidized wind farm in Germany.
This switch is projected to save over 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the next decade, marking a significant step towards GMH Gruppe's climate-neutral steel production goals.
The company aims to halve its emissions by 2030, with a target of near-zero emissions by 2039.
Marc Oliver Arnold, the plant's director, emphasized that this initiative represents a major advancement in making steel tempering more climate-friendly, complementing the already electric steel melting process.
