EDF Renewables and ESB have successfully generated the first power from the 450MW Neart na Gaoithe (NNG) offshore wind farm located off the east coast of Scotland. This milestone, which had initially been scheduled for last year, was delayed due to various challenges, particularly related to the project's electrical system. The completion of this phase paves the way for full commissioning of the wind farm, expected in 2025.
The NNG project will feature 54 Siemens Gamesa turbines, contributing to Scotland's net zero targets. Matthias Haag, NNG project director, expressed optimism about this achievement, highlighting its importance in advancing the project towards completion. He acknowledged the support and patience of local communities during the project's progression.
Ryanne Burges, director of offshore for EDF Renewables, celebrated the milestone and emphasized the wind farm's role in accelerating the transition to a net zero future. She noted that NNG will generate substantial clean electricity for the grid in the coming months and will provide ongoing benefits to local communities, including support for local projects, job creation, and strengthening the supply chain.
NNG has already made a positive impact on local communities in east Scotland, collaborating with businesses such as Forth Ports at the Port of Dundee, I&H Brown, Briggs Marine, and Muir Construction Ltd. The Operations and Maintenance Base at Eyemouth Harbour is becoming an integral part of the community, currently employing 27 local workers, with plans to create approximately 50 jobs over the project's 25-year lifespan.
