MT Group to Build First Hydrogen Station in the Baltic States

has signed a contract with the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority to develop the first green production and refueling station in the Baltic States. The project has a total projected value of €10.5 million and will be located in the Port of Klaipeda, .

Under the contract, MT Group will undertake the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of the technological systems, including electrical, automation, and safety setups. The company has already begun preparatory work, with construction set to start in 2025. The plant will use a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser to produce approximately 500 kilograms of hydrogen daily, amounting to an annual output of around 127 tonnes. The hydrogen will be stored in high-pressure tanks for various uses.

Mindaugas Zakaras, CEO of MT Group, stated, “The Port of Klaipeda, as a strategic transportation hub, has great potential to become a flagship of green technologies in the Baltic region.” He commended the port's commitment to sustainable green energy and addressing change through this pilot project.

Algis Latakas, general director of the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority, added, “Another environmentally friendly energy source is coming to Lithuania. In a couple of years, in addition to electricity generated by solar, wind or other renewable energy sources, we will also have .” He emphasized the project's role in reducing environmental impact and contributing to clean energy development in Lithuania and Europe.

The produced hydrogen is planned to meet the needs of the Port of Klaipeda and will also be utilized for rail and road transport, including private vehicles, with future plans to refuel commercial ships arriving at the port.
