South African chemicals and energy company Sasol has launched commercial operations at the 69-MW Msenge Emoyeni Wind Farm, which now supplies clean energy to its Sasolburg site in the Free State.
The wind farm, located in Bedford, Eastern Cape, features 16 turbines and was constructed in just 18 months.
The project was developed by a consortium led by African Clean Energy Developments (ACED), with African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM) holding a 62% stake through its IDEAS Fund and Reatile Renewables holding 38%.
Sasol, which signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) in January 2023, will use the renewable energy for green hydrogen production.
This project is Sasol's first large-scale renewable initiative and contributes to its target of procuring up to 1,200 MW of renewable energy by 2030. To date, the company has contracted 757 MW through PPAs.
