OnPath Energy has selected AECOM as the lead consultant for the 40MW Barnsdale Solar Energy Park, located between Kippax and Allerton Bywater in West Yorkshire, England. The project aims to generate enough electricity to meet the annual needs of up to 12,000 homes, contributing to the UK's renewable energy goals.
AECOM will collaborate with OnPath Energy on various aspects of the project, including planning, transport, engineering, and environmental management. It will also be responsible for the design of the solar park's power system. Construction is expected to begin early next year, with completion anticipated within 12 months.
Spanning 50 hectares, the solar park will connect to the Ledston Primary electricity substation. The project includes an extensive ecology strategy, featuring wildflower meadows, wetland habitats, and native tree planting, aiming for a biodiversity net gain of 107%.
Martin Kellerman, OnPath Energy's construction director, said the solar park would significantly contribute to Yorkshire's energy security and the UK's net-zero goals. He noted AECOM's role in the project, highlighting the consultancy's expertise in delivering large infrastructure projects. “AECOM's all-round expertise and their experience of delivering large infrastructure projects provides us with a one-stop shop for all the different types of work that will go into creating the Barnsdale Solar Energy Park,” he stated.
Regional firms are being encouraged to participate in subcontracting opportunities for the various components of the project. Additionally, OnPath Energy plans to allocate up to £1 million from the park's revenue to a community fund supporting local organizations and initiatives.
