Ceará's state governor Elmano de Freitas, in conjunction with Brazil's Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, has approved the initial phase of Fortescue Metals Group's USD 5 billion (EUR 5.4 billion) industrial green hydrogen project.
The Australian company plans to establish the facility on a 121-hectare (298.9 acres) site within Sector 2 of Ceará's Export Processing Zone (EPZ), located in the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP).
Once operational, the facility is projected to produce approximately 500 tonnes of green hydrogen per day, utilizing 1.2 GW of renewable energy. Fortescue anticipates commencing groundwork by the end of this year, following support from its board of directors.
To date, the Ceará government has signed 39 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and six partnership agreements to advance the development of this project, underscoring the region's commitment to becoming a hub for green hydrogen production.
