Brazil: Fortescue Metals Group’s Green Hydrogen Project in Ceará Receives Approval

Ceará's state governor Elmano de Freitas, in conjunction with 's Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, has approved the initial phase of Metals Group's USD 5 billion (EUR 5.4 billion) industrial project.

The Australian company plans to establish the facility on a 121-hectare (298.9 acres) site within Sector 2 of Ceará's Export Processing Zone (EPZ), located in the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP).

Once operational, the facility is projected to produce approximately 500 tonnes of green per day, utilizing 1.2 GW of . Fortescue anticipates commencing groundwork by the end of this year, following support from its board of directors.

To date, the Ceará government has signed 39 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and six partnership agreements to advance the development of this project, underscoring the region's commitment to becoming a hub for green hydrogen production.
