IRENA, the International Renewable Energy Agency, has teamed up with thyssenkrupp to accelerate the green transformation globally in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The partnership agreement focuses on the production and supply of green hydrogen and other green energy carriers and their transport, along the entire hydrogen value chain in demand, supply and infrastructure.
IRENA's Director-General, Francesco La Camera, stated that “renewables-based hydrogen is a critical pillar to decarbonise our economies, meet climate goals and secure energy supplies”. This partnership with thyssenkrupp will allow for increased knowledge exchange and technological solutions that will help speed up the production, delivery and use of green hydrogen.
Thyssenkrupp CEO Martina Merz also expressed the importance of the partnership, noting that “the green transformation is the greatest challenge of our time – more of a disruption than just a transformation. And the tasks can only succeed in a global alliance.”
The collaboration will involve identifying green hydrogen applications based on different industries and potential domestic hydrogen demand, as well as developing the business case for green hydrogen as a major contributor to deep decarbonisation. Both IRENA and thyssenkrupp will also engage with a broad range of stakeholders within IRENA's Collaborative Framework on Green Hydrogen, Coalition for Action and the Alliance for Industry Decarbonisation, as they work together to achieve the Paris Agreement goals.
