Spain's photovoltaic (PV) generation has already exceeded last year's total by reaching 37,551 gigawatt hours (GWh) on October 5, 2024, according to Red Eléctrica. This surpasses the 37,472 GWh generated in 2023, which was previously the country's highest annual PV output.
Favorable weather conditions and a growing installed capacity of 28,691 megawatts (MW) have fueled this achievement. PV production from January to October saw a 19% rise compared to the same period in 2023, making it the third-largest energy source in Spain, following wind power.
Renewables now make up 57.5% of Spain's electricity generation this year, the highest share on record. PV led the national energy mix for four consecutive months (May-August), benefiting from longer daylight hours during the summer.
Several records were also broken this year, with July posting the highest monthly PV output at 5,817 GWh and July 12 marking the highest daily production at 212 GWh, further underscoring Spain's progress in transitioning to renewable energy.
