A consortium comprising EDF Renewables, Japan's J-POWER (TYO:9513), and UK-based YamnaCo is gearing up to initiate site studies for a large-scale green ammonia project in Oman, targeting an annual production capacity of 1 million tonnes of green ammonia.
In a recent social media post, YamnaCo stated, “The Yamna team, alongside our Consortium partner EDF, conducted a productive site visit in the Salalah region. We explored potential locations for the project facilities in preparation for launching detailed site studies and renewable energy measurement campaigns.”
The post further highlighted, “This visit marks the beginning of the advanced project development activities, bringing us one step closer to making our large-scale green ammonia project in Oman, with a planned capacity of 1 million tons per year.”
This consortium emerged as one of the winners in the second round of Oman's green hydrogen tender. The project involves the development of a 2.5 GW hydrogen plant in the Dhofar region, aiming for a production target of approximately 178,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. The electrolyser will utilize 4.5 GW of renewable energy from wind and solar sources, complemented by battery storage.
The hydrogen produced will be transported to an ammonia plant slated for construction in the Salalah Free Zone, where it is expected to generate 1 million tonnes of green ammonia annually.
