Invenergy has recently completed the Number Three Wind Energy Center located in Lewis County, New York, with a capacity of 103.9 MW. The construction of this project began in August 2021 and it comprises 27 wind turbines. What sets it apart is its status as the first renewable energy initiative under the Clean Path NY program, which is a collaborative effort involving Invenergy, energyRe, and the New York Power Authority.
The Number Three Wind Energy Center is expected to make a significant contribution to New York's electricity supply, delivering approximately 7.5 million MWh annually. This represents a substantial step towards meeting the renewable energy goals outlined in the state's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which aims to have 70 percent of the state's electricity come from renewable sources by 2030, and achieve 100 percent zero-emission electricity by 2040.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the completion of this project is also expected to provide economic advantages to the local community. With an estimated annual economic investment of over $1 million, various entities such as the towns of Lowville and Harrisburg, the Lowville and Copenhagen Central School Districts, Lewis County, and the Lewis County Economic Development Fund revolving loan program will benefit from these funds. Additionally, Invenergy has partnered with M&T Community & Environmental Development Corp, an affiliate of M&T Bank, for tax equity investment purposes.
The Number Three Wind Energy Center has received recognition from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). In 2016, it was one of the 11 projects selected for the purchase of Tier 1 renewable energy certificates (RECs). Each Tier 1 REC represents the energy production of one megawatt-hour, highlighting the significance of this project in advancing New York's renewable energy objectives.
