TenneT Awards €5.5 Billion Contract for HVDC Cable Systems for Offshore Grid Projects

TenneT, the leading electricity transmission system operator in and the Netherlands, has awarded a €5.5 billion supply contract for at least ten 525kV to support ten offshore grid projects. The contract includes six German and three 2GW offshore grid connection systems and one German project, NordOstLink, which is expected to be operational in 2032, as well as plans for further future projects.

The selected suppliers for the production and installation of the ten cable systems are NKT, Nexans and a consortium of Jan De Nul Group, LS Cable & System and Denys. NKT will be responsible for the connections for Nederwiek 3, Doordewind 1, and Doordewind 2, while Nexans received a contract for the cable connections of BalWin3, LanWin4 and LanWin2. The consortium of Jan De Nul, LS Cable and Denys will be responsible for the cable connections for BalWin4, LanWin1 and LanWin5. The consortium was also awarded the contract for the TenneT part of the onshore 525kV DC corridor NordOstLink in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

The scope of work of the contracts includes cable design, engineering, production, delivery, project management, onshore, offshore, and nearshore installation of 525kV HVDC cables, and all jointing works in submarine and on-land sections. The selected parties expect to start activities in the course of 2023. The expected start for onshore cable laying activities will be after 2025, while offshore cable laying activities will begin in 2026.

Together, we will deliver around 7000km of HVDC cable for fifteen on- and offshore grid connection systems in Germany and the Netherlands by 2032 with this award alone.”
