Queensland government-owned energy generator Stanwell Corp has finalized an agreement to acquire the 436.5-megawatt Tarong West Wind Farm project from its original developer, RES. The announcement was made on Friday, although the financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
The Tarong West wind project is set to receive approximately AUD 776.1 million (USD 538 million/EUR 482 million) in state funding.
Located 30 kilometers southwest of Kingaroy in the South Burnett region, the complex will consist of 97 turbine generators, to be installed near Stanwell's Tarong coal-fired power station. Upon completion, the wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power around 230,000 homes annually.
The project recently obtained development approval from the Queensland government, with Stanwell anticipating a final investment decision early next year.
“Tarong West Wind Farm will be Australia's largest publicly owned wind farm, which is a game changer for Queensland's renewable energy future,” said Mick de Brenni, the state energy minister.
Currently, Stanwell holds more than 4,000 megawatts of renewable energy and storage capacity in its portfolio, which includes projects in development or under construction. The company aims to achieve between 9 gigawatts and 10 gigawatts of large-scale wind and solar capacity by 2035.
