The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is set to enhance its waste management practices by constructing a waste-to-energy facility in Pyara Nagar, Sangareddy, India. The planned 152-acre plant aims to generate 15 megawatts (MW) of electricity and produce 270 biogas units daily.
Sealed trucks will transport waste to the facility, where it will be stored underground and separated into dry and wet waste. The dry waste will be utilized for electricity generation, while the wet waste will be processed into compressed biogas.
To ensure air quality and mitigate odour, biofilters will be installed at the site. The plant will also employ dry digestion technology for managing wet waste, which is expected to help reduce leachate production.
In addition to the facility at Pyara Nagar, GHMC is exploring four other potential locations for more waste-to-energy plants. “The Pyara Nagar plant, estimated to cost Rs 600 crore, is expected to be operational by 2025. Additionally, a 24 MW waste-to-energy plant is being developed in Jawahar Nagar to further enhance waste management and energy production in the city,” said a senior official in GHMC.
