GazelEnergie, a subsidiary of Czech energy group EPH, is evaluating the conversion of the Émile Huchet power plant in the Moselle department from coal to gas, shifting from its previous plan to convert the facility to biomass.
The estimated cost for the biomass conversion was €100 million, while the gas conversion is projected to cost around €110 million. Both options are significantly less expensive than constructing a new plant.
The conversion to gas will enhance the power plant's efficiency during peak demand periods, which occur approximately 300 to 700 hours per year, replacing the existing coal-based system.
Additionally, the site is already well-connected to gas infrastructure, with TotalEnergies operating a nearby two-unit 880 MW gas-fired plant. Émile Huchet is notable for being one of the last two coal-powered plants remaining in France.
