Energy officials from nine EU member states in the Mediterranean expressed their commitment to turning the region into a renewable energy hub and pursuing ways to facilitate cross-border projects.
Representatives of the MED9 group—comprising Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain—indicated plans to conduct assessments of specific opportunities and challenges to realize this goal.
“We invite the European Commission to collaborate closely with us in undertaking this assessment, subject to resources availability,” energy ministers or their representatives stated in a joint statement following their meeting in Larnaca, Cyprus.
Additionally, Cyprus and Greece announced plans to cooperate on creating a subsea electricity cable linking continental Europe to Cyprus, aimed at alleviating the island's energy isolation, which still relies heavily on carbon-intensive heavy fuel oil for electricity generation.
