Malaysian renewable energy developer, Samaiden Group Bhd, has announced a joint venture agreement with two Cambodian firms and a Malaysian company to develop a biogas project in Cambodia's Preah Sihanouk province. The indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Samaiden Group, Samaiden Energy (Cambodia) Co Ltd, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mong Sotheary Trading Co Ltd (MST), Management Venture Asia (Cambodia) Ltd (MVA), and Panna Energy Sdn Bhd (Panna) to explore the economic benefits and other impacts of the project.
Under the MoU, MST will provide the land for the project, while MVA will provide business consultancy and support. Panna Energy will be responsible for providing the financial and commercial assistance for research and project development. Samaiden Cambodia will provide engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning services, as well as facilitate the environmental, social, and governance principles of the project.

According to Samaiden Cambodia executive director Fong Yeng Foon, the country needs more green and resilient investments in low-carbon and climate resilient infrastructure to ensure adaptability to the impact of climate change. The project is expected to help mitigate methane-intensive rice and livestock production, and promote the use of biogas in livestock management, organic fertilisers, and deep fertiliser technology.
The biogas project is a significant step towards Cambodia's sustainable development goals. The country has been investing heavily in renewable energy, particularly in solar power, to achieve its target of increasing the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to 20% by 2023. With the development of the biogas project, Cambodia can further diversify its renewable energy sources and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
The joint venture is expected to create significant economic and social benefits for the local communities. It will provide job opportunities, improve energy security, and reduce carbon emissions. The biogas project will also contribute to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and Goal 13 (Climate Action).
