Spanish gas infrastructure company Redexis SA has successfully blended green hydrogen into the gas grid on the island of Mallorca, marking a significant milestone as the first instance of such integration in Spain.
The project involved the construction of a hydrogen reception station, a dedicated 3.2-kilometre (1.99 miles) hydrogen pipeline, and a blending facility to facilitate the injection of hydrogen into the existing gas network.
The hydrogen is sourced from the Lloseta solar-powered green hydrogen plant, which was completed in March 2022. Redexis invested €3.5 million (approximately $3.89 million) in the project, which is part of the larger Green Hysland decarbonization initiative in Mallorca, funded by the European Union through the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking.
This project not only demonstrates the feasibility of integrating green hydrogen into the gas grid but also establishes a foundation for future developments in energy infrastructure.
Redexis envisions that the success of this initiative could serve as a model for similar projects in other regions across Spain.
