Hitachi Energy has announced plans to invest an additional $155 million to enhance its manufacturing footprint across North America. This investment includes the construction of a new distribution transformer factory in Reynosa, Mexico, and expansions at its South Boston, Virginia transformer factory, as well as its high-voltage switchgear and breakers facility in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania.
The company has seen a significant increase in its order backlog, which has tripled since 2020, with North America playing a key role. To meet the growing demand for electrical equipment such as transformers and switchgear, Hitachi Energy has also expanded its workforce, adding over 8,000 employees globally between 2020 and 2023, including 1,200 in the U.S.
In a statement, Hitachi Energy CEO Andreas Schierenbeck noted the strong demand for electrical equipment in the region. “One of our highest priorities is making sure that we are growing our capabilities to address our customers' present and future needs,” he said. He also emphasized the company's focus on research and development to support the energy transition without compromising safety and reliability.
The new factory in Reynosa, which represents a $70 million investment, will focus on producing single-phase, padmount distribution transformers for the North American market, creating 350 jobs in the region. In South Boston, Hitachi Energy will invest over $25 million to expand production of large distribution transformers, contributing to local economic development and creating around 100 new jobs.
Additionally, Hitachi Energy plans to invest $60 million to expand its Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania facility, doubling production capacity for high-voltage switchgear and breakers. This investment, driven by rising demand for high-voltage products in North America, is expected to add approximately 100 jobs.
These initiatives build on previous investments, including a recently completed project in Jefferson City, Missouri, and an ongoing expansion in Varennes, Quebec, further strengthening Hitachi Energy's capabilities in North America.
