TGS has completed an ultra-high-resolution 3D (UHR3D) survey on behalf of Community Offshore Wind in the New York Bight, a key area identified for offshore wind development. The lease area, which was acquired by Community Offshore Wind in February 2022, has the potential to generate up to 3GW of electricity—enough to power over one million homes and businesses.
The survey, which began in October 2023 and lasted more than eight months, provided detailed information about soil conditions crucial for designing the offshore wind project. By using UHR3D technology, TGS was able to deliver significantly more detailed data on the near-surface geology compared to traditional 2D site surveys.
The survey was conducted by the TGS vessel Sanco Swift, marking TGS's second offshore wind site characterization project. The data gathered is expected to improve the precision of the wind farm's design and development.
Carel Hooijkaas, executive vice president of New Energy Solutions at TGS, commented on the project, saying, “The acquisition of UHR3D seismic over the full lease will provide Community Offshore Wind with a solid foundation to develop their offshore wind farm site in the New York Bight. Our geophysical approach to mapping and understanding the shallow subsurface layers will reduce uncertainty and speed up site characterisation.”
Doug Perkins, president and project director of Community Offshore Wind, highlighted the importance of the survey for the project's success, stating, “We are building a project that is going to generate clean energy for communities in the US Northeast for roughly 30 years, so precision is key for building a project of this scale. The data acquired from the survey allows us to plan with more precision and certainty than ever before.”
The partnership between TGS and Community Offshore Wind, a joint venture between RWE and National Grid Ventures, aims to develop the largest parcel of offshore wind capacity awarded in the competitive lease sale by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.
