Dubai-based renewables developer AMEA Power has commenced construction on a 24-MWp solar project in Uganda, the largest utility-scale grid-connected solar facility in the West Nile Region. The project, spanning 52 hectares and costing USD 19 million (EUR 17.5 million), is located in the village of Ombachi, Madi Okollo District.
Implemented by AMEA's local unit, Ituka West Nile Uganda Limited, the facility is expected to become operational in the third quarter of 2025. Once completed, it will generate 53,940 MWh of clean energy annually, sufficient to power more than 192,640 local homes.
The project includes the installation of a 1X24 MVA 33/132 kV transformer substation/switchyard. It will connect to the newly constructed Lira-Gulu-Nebbi-Arua 132 kV transmission line, operated by the project's offtaker, Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL).
Financing for the project was secured from the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF) and supported by African Trade and Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI) through its Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF).
A ceremony marking the start of construction was attended by company representatives and local officials, including Uganda's Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu.
