DTEK’s EU Arm Acquires 133-MW Battery Energy Storage System in Poland

DRI, the EU renewables arm of Ukrainian energy group DTEK, has completed the of a 133-MW/532-MWh system (BESS) project in Poland from local developer Columbus Energy.

The project, located in Trzebinia, Chrzanow County, southern Poland, is set to begin construction later this year and become operational in January 2027, according to DTEK.

Under a 17-year contract, the four-hour battery system will provide energy capacity to the Polish market starting from 2027. This contract was awarded in the 2022 Capacity Market auction held by Polish transmission system operator PSE.

“The storage of renewable energy can help improve grid reliability, optimize energy costs and expand overall renewable production capacity, which is important for Poland to reach its 62 GW installed renewable energy target by 2030,” said DRI's CEO, John Stuart.

The acquisition, initially agreed upon in March, marks DTEK's entry into the Polish renewables market and aligns with the group's goal to deploy up to 1 GW of renewable energy and storage capacity in the country by 2030 through DRI.
