French energy company TotalEnergies SE has acquired a 50% interest in the 795-MW OranjeWind offshore wind farm project in Dutch waters. The stake was purchased from Germany's RWE AG, although financial details were not disclosed.
TotalEnergies plans to use its share of the wind farm's output to power 350 MW of electrolysers, which will produce approximately 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This low-carbon fuel will be supplied to the company's refineries in Northern Europe, aiming to reduce around 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year, and up to 5 million tonnes by 2030.
“Investing in the OranjeWind project aligns with our strategy to decarbonize our refineries across Europe,” TotalEnergies said. The initiative supports the company's goal of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions from its oil and gas operations by 40% by 2030, compared to 2015 levels.
The OranjeWind wind farm will be located 53 kilometers off the Dutch coast in the Hollandse Kust West area. It is expected to begin generating electricity for over one million Dutch households annually by early 2028, with construction starting in 2026.
RWE secured the project in the Dutch Hollandse Kust West VII tender in November 2022. The company plans to install floating solar panels, a subsea lithium-ion battery, electrolysers, and boilers as part of the project.
