The world's largest photovoltaic energy transmission project, the Australia-Asia Power Link, has been granted environmental approval by Australian authorities. The initiative, spearheaded by SunCable, aims to transmit solar energy from Australia to Singapore via a 4,300-kilometer submarine cable, heralding a major advancement in renewable energy transmission.
The project will see solar photovoltaic energy transmitted over the extensive submarine cable, connecting Australia to Singapore. It includes the construction of a photovoltaic plant in northern Australia with a capacity of up to 10 gigawatts.
Additionally, an 800-kilometer overhead transmission line will link Darwin station to the Indonesian border, complemented by local energy storage to enhance supply efficiency and reliability.
Cameron Garnsworthy, Director at SunCable, emphasized the significance of the environmental approval: “This approval is critical for advancing our commercial, engineering, and development activities. It represents a crucial milestone for the Australia-Asia Power Link project.”
Despite this progress, several challenges remain. SunCable must negotiate land use with local landowners, secure agreements with various regulatory bodies, and obtain the necessary financial backing to support the project.
Looking ahead, SunCable plans to expand the project's generation capacity to 20 gigawatts of solar PV and increase battery storage to between 36 and 42 gigawatt-hours (GWh).
This expansion aims to further enhance the efficiency and reliability of the energy transmission. Electricity deliveries to Singapore are anticipated to commence early in the next decade, marking a significant contribution to global sustainability efforts.
