Engie has initiated the construction of the 75-megawatt Grootspruit solar plant in the Free State, partnering with Pele Green Energy. This project is part of Bid Window 5 of South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).
The Grootspruit plant, along with the 75 MW Graspan solar PV plant in the Northern Cape, is expected to be completed by late 2025.
“Our goal is to enhance South Africa's energy resilience,” said Mo Hoosen of Engie. “This project involves collaboration with Pele Green Energy, local government officials, engineers, and contractors. We look forward to the impact these plants will have.”
Ronald Chindeka, investment and funding head at Pele Green Energy, stated, “These projects contribute to power generation and local development. Partnering with Engie is a positive step.”
Aurex Constructors and Ablon Construction have been chosen as contractors for the Grootspruit project. Aurex CEO Stuart Kent said, “This project highlights our commitment to sustainable energy solutions and local job creation.”
Ablon Contracts Manager Lizelle Pike added, “We are pleased to be involved in the Grootspruit solar farm, contributing to South Africa's clean energy goals.”
The Grootspruit and Graspan plants are projected to reduce South Africa's greenhouse gas emissions by 100,000 tons of CO2 annually.
