Spanish renewable gas company Enagas Renovable and Verbund Green Hydrogen GmbH, a subsidiary of Austrian utility Verbund AG, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop green hydrogen projects in Spain, according to a press release on Monday.
The partnership aims to produce hydrogen for sectors in Europe that are difficult to decarbonize. The companies will focus on large-scale green hydrogen projects in areas of Spain with significant wind and solar power potential.
This will enable the production of large volumes of low-cost hydrogen, which will be exported to the European Union through the H2Med hydrogen pipeline and the European Hydrogen Backbone, Enagas Renovable stated.
Enagas Renovable, the green arm of Spanish gas transmission system operator Enagas SA, is involved in both the H2Med and the European Hydrogen Backbone cross-border projects.
“The Spanish market plays an important role in the growth of our hydrogen business, not only to advance local hydrogen production in Spain but also to develop import routes to Central Europe,” commented Michael Strugl, CEO of Verbund AG. “This cooperation will leverage our joint activities in the Spanish market and stimulate the development of trans-European hydrogen infrastructure to enable large-scale supply of green hydrogen on the continent.”
