Nordex Group Introduces 5MW Turbine for US Market

The Nordex Group has unveiled a new 5MW turbine variant, the N169/5.X, tailored to meet the specific needs of the US market. With a rotor diameter of 169 meters and a power rating of up to 5.5MW, the turbine is designed for regions with low to medium wind speeds and minimal turbulence. José Luis Blanco, Chief Executive of the Nordex Group, highlighted the strategic importance of this launch, stating, "Expanding our activities in North America is a key element of our strategy. The N169/5.X is one of the largest and most efficient turbines for the US market, developed to support our growth targets in this region." The new turbine variant leverages proven components from Nordex's existing 5MW class to enhance yield, particularly in projects with limited grid capacity. "Once again, we have followed our proven approach of an evolutionary product strategy by using proven components of our 5MW class to develop a turbine variant that significantly increases yield, especially in projects with limited grid capacity, through an optimized capacity factor," Blanco added. Manav Sharma, Chief Executive of Nordex Group's North America division, emphasized the company's readiness to capitalize on the anticipated growth in the US market. "With this new US turbine, we are well positioned to benefit from the expected growth of the US market. We already have our N163 and N175 variants offering for land constrained and some grid constrained sites in multiple configurations. The N169/5.X will allow us to address additional customer needs in grid constrained sites." The Nordex Group's local supply chain ensures compliance with the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) by manufacturing key components such as nacelles, drive trains, and hubs in the United States. The company plans to produce the N169/5.X alongside the N163 turbine at its facility in West Branch, Iowa, with production slated to commence in 2026.
