SSE Renewables, a subsidiary of British utility SSE PLC, has received planning permission for its inaugural solar project in Ireland, a 21-MWp photovoltaic (PV) park in County Wexford.
The project was approved by Wexford County Council, as announced by SSE Renewables on Wednesday.
The Richfield Solar Farm will be situated in the townlands of Hooks and Yoletown, adjacent to SSE's 18-turbine Richfield wind park located at Bridgetown. The solar plant will share grid connections with the existing 27-MW wind farm, which has been operational since 2006.
SSE Renewables submitted the planning application for the solar project in September of the previous year. The company indicated that the project's advancement is contingent upon securing a viable economic route to market and finalizing investment decisions. Additional permits will be required to dynamically allocate the existing wind farm's export capacity.
Once operational, the Richfield solar park is expected to generate sufficient power for approximately 4,500 Irish homes annually. The adjacent wind farm currently provides green electricity to 18,000 homes.
