French renewable energy company GreenYellow is set to install over 350 MW of photovoltaic (PV) panels across Carrefour's domestic network in France by 2027. The companies have signed a 20-year contract aiming to solarize the parking lots of 350 hypermarkets and supermarkets, providing electricity for Carrefour's own use.
The project, regarded as the largest decentralised solar power initiative in Europe, will involve PV shading systems being mounted on the parking lots of 90 hypermarkets and 260 supermarkets. These installations will cover regions including Normandy, Ile-de-France, Hauts-de-France, Grand Est, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Nearly 180,000 parking spaces will be equipped with PV panels, expected to produce approximately 450 GWh of electricity annually, covering around 20% of the stores' power requirements.
The development phase is set to start this month, with implementation beginning next year and half of the project expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
This self-consumption initiative, realized under GreenYellow's third-party financing model, aims to help Carrefour manage power price fluctuations and support its goal of using 100% renewable energy by 2030. Additionally, it aligns with Carrefour's target of generating 1 TWh of solar power annually in France, Spain, and Brazil by 2027.
