Vargronn, a floating offshore wind developer, has appealed to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to reaffirm support for the floating wind sector in the upcoming King's Speech. The developer is urging the Labour Party, recently elected into office, to uphold commitments to expand the UK's floating offshore wind capacity to 5GW by 2030.
Stephen Bull, CEO of Vargronn, emphasized the importance of government action, stating, “The UK has ambitions to deploy up to 5GW of floating offshore wind by 2030 and the Labour Party has already committed its support to the sector, describing it as a significant frontier technology.”
Bull further stressed the need for decisive governmental measures, adding, “Now in office, Prime Minister Keir Starmer must urgently establish the UK as a global leader in floating offshore wind – we hope he will use the King's Speech to announce measures that will accelerate the development of the UK supply chain, getting the technology ready for commercial-scale wind farms, and to express the government's intention to increase the Allocation Round 6 budget pot for floating offshore wind.”
Vargronn is currently developing the Green Volt offshore floating wind farm off the Scottish North Sea coast in partnership with Flotation Energy. The project, with a planned capacity of up to 560MW, aims to supply green power to the UK grid and support the electrification and decarbonization of North Sea oil and gas platforms.
The Green Volt project has recently achieved significant milestones, including onshore and offshore planning consent, a grid connection agreement, and eligibility for the Contract for Difference Allocation Round 6.
