Energy consultancy ABL has been tasked by Germany's Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) to conduct a navigational risk assessment for offshore wind farm sites in the N-10 area of the German North Sea. This commission expands upon ABL's ongoing collaboration with BSH, focusing on safety evaluations across Danish, Dutch, and German North Sea waters.
Tilo Klappenbach, ABL's country manager in Germany, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are pleased to continue our collaboration with BSH to support early marine risk mitigation in the North Sea's extensive future offshore wind plans.”
The consultancy's responsibilities include delivering a comprehensive assessment of navigational risks and proposing measures for risk mitigation. These findings are expected to inform the preliminary investigations of the N-10 offshore development sites, managed by ABL's Hamburg operation with the involvement of their ports and harbours team.
Tom Chitseko, principal consultant of marine risk at ABL in London, emphasized the project's significance, noting, “Given the ambitious offshore development plans for the German Bight Sea area, it is crucial that site interfaces with shipping risks are understood and addressed.”
Germany aims to achieve 70GW of offshore wind generation capacity by 2045, making early identification of risks pivotal in averting delays and reducing project costs.
