Belgian energy producer Luminus has submitted a permit application for a pioneering 100MW battery storage project at the Ringvaart power plant in Ghent, aimed at bolstering grid flexibility and stability.
“The battery project provides an answer to the increasing need for flexibility and stability on the electricity grid,” stated Luminus.
Scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2026, the storage park will be connected to the ELIA grid in the Ghent canal zone. Once operational, it will boast a storage capacity of 400MWh, equivalent to the daily consumption of 42,000 families.
Luminus Chief Executive Grégoire Dallemagne emphasized the company's commitment to renewable energy: “As number one in wind energy on the mainland and hydropower in Belgium, we are fully committed to renewable energy. With our battery projects, here in Ringvaart and also in Lixhe in Wallonia, we want to provide the necessary flexibility on the electricity grid and enable further growth of renewable energy.”
The 400MWh battery installation at Ringvaart represents an environmentally friendly alternative to Luminus' previously planned expansion involving open cycle gas turbines at the same location, while the existing power plant will continue its operations.
The project aligns with Belgium's strategy to enhance grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy sources into the national energy mix.
