Italian energy supplier Edisonand local industrial group Webuild SpA have announced a strategic partnership to develop significant pumped-storage hydro (PSH) projects in Italy. Their joint effort aims to add at least 500 MW of new capacity by 2030.
Under the agreement, Edison will lead the development of two key projects: the Pescopagano plant in Basilicata and the Villarosa site in Sicily.
These initiatives, pending approvals from the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and local licensing procedures, will participate in forthcoming tenders managed by Terna for additional storage capacities in Italy.
The partnership between Edison and Webuild is expected to attract approximately EUR 1.2 billion (USD 1.29 billion) in private investments, focusing primarily on Southern Italy. These projects will utilize a combination of existing and new reservoirs, with significant underground engineering to minimize environmental impact.
Edison aims to expand its portfolio of installed green capacity to 5 GW by 2030, aligning with Italy's broader energy transition objectives.
