Swiss utility BKW Energie AG has inked a deal to commence supplying solar power to the German arm of Nestle SA starting from July 2024, according to a statement released on Thursday.
Under the power purchase agreement (PPA), the electricity will be generated from photovoltaic systems located in Germany, BKW noted in its press release.
“Thanks to power purchase agreements (PPA) with BKW and other energy suppliers, Nestle Deutschland will source 80 GWh of electricity per year from German wind farms and solar facilities by the end of 2026,” BKW explained.
This energy supply is expected to cover approximately 70% of Nestle's electricity needs for its German plants, which currently require about 113 GWh annually. To offset the remaining 30%, Nestle plans to invest in new renewable energy systems and purchase guarantees of origin.
Previously, Nestle's German unit had also secured a wind power deal with energy trader Axpo Holding AG as part of its broader strategy to transition to renewable energy sources.
These initiatives are integral to Nestle's global sustainability goals, aiming to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
