Octopus Group's Australian unit has secured planning approval for a significant 500 MW/1,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project near Brisbane, Queensland.
The Blackstone project, heralded as one of the largest of its kind in the state, aims to store sufficient electricity to sustainably power up to 70,000 homes daily.
Following approval from the Ipswich City Council, Octopus Australia will proceed with close collaboration alongside key stakeholders such as Firm Power and Powerlink for the project's subsequent phases, as outlined in a press release.
Octopus Group acquired the project in October 2023 and intends to integrate it with existing renewable assets in Queensland, including the operational Dulacca Wind Farm and the Ardandra solar-plus-storage site currently under development.
This expansion underscores Octopus Group's commitment to bolstering energy infrastructure and sustainability efforts in Australia's renewable energy sector.
