Renewable energy developer CWP Global and Corner Brook Port Corporation (CPBC) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to evaluate the feasibility of establishing a green hydrogen hub at an industrial port in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada's eastern province.
Dubbed Project Gwinya, the initiative plans to utilize up to 5 GW of wind power capacity to generate green hydrogen.
Additionally, the envisioned complex will house a green hydrogen-powered hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant for the production of environmentally friendly iron, as outlined in a press statement by CWP on Friday.
CWP intends to initiate public information sessions in July and proceed with formal project registration, environmental assessment, and feasibility studies. These assessments will evaluate various aspects of the proposed hub, including infrastructure, logistics, and economic impacts.
Steve Delaney, business and development manager for hydrogen at CWP, emphasized the project's commitment to engaging local communities, First Nations, and stakeholders throughout its development phases.
