Spanish renewables developer-operator Zelestra has successfully grid-connected a 108-megawatt peak (MWp) solar farm in La Gloria, northeastern Colombia, marking its second major project in the country.
According to Zelestra, the La Mata solar farm represents an investment of USD 80 million (EUR 74 million) and is capable of generating enough electricity to meet the annual consumption needs of over 106,000 households.
The grid connection of La Mata follows closely on the heels of Zelestra's earlier achievement in Colombia with the 144-MWp La Union solar farm. Both projects secured 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) through Colombia's renewable energy auction held in October 2021.
Jose Luis Garcia, Zelestra's CEO for Latin America, emphasized the significance of these milestones for the company's regional strategy, stating, “This milestone is critical for Zelestra as we pursue a very ambitious plan for the region to meet its decarbonization goals. We have been present in Chile and Peru for many years, and now we are consolidating our presence in Colombia, a country where we aim to grow in the coming years.”
