Brazilian power giant Eletrobras and pulpmaker Suzano have announced a strategic partnership aimed at developing sustainable solutions, Reuters reports. The collaboration, initiated after year-long negotiations, will focus on producing renewable hydrogen and exploring the feasibility of a synthetic fuels plant.
“We are excited to explore the potential of ‘green' fuel production using biogenic CO2 from Suzano's pulp operations,” stated executives from both companies. Biogenic CO2, generated from biomass burning and black liquor, will be combined with renewable hydrogen to create synthetic fuels, targeting sectors such as maritime transport for decarbonization.
“E-methanol is one of the most promising alternatives to replace fossil fuels in the maritime industry,” said Suzano's energy head, Paulo Squariz, emphasizing its role in the global energy transition.
Eletrobras, leveraging its extensive hydroelectric assets, aims to supply clean power for future green hydrogen projects at competitive prices. The company recently partnered with infrastructure firms to advance green hydrogen initiatives across Brazil.
“This agreement sets the stage for strategic cooperation to meet growing demand for low-carbon hydrogen and derivatives,” noted Italo Freitas, Eletrobras' head of energy solutions.
