German firms The Mobility House and Green Energy Storage Initiative SE (GESI Giga Batteries) have formed a joint venture aimed at constructing large-scale battery storage systems across Germany, marking a significant push towards bolstering the country's energy infrastructure.
Announced on Tuesday, the partnership plans to develop up to 8 gigawatts (GW) of storage capacity by 2035, focusing on locations crucial for grid support and repurposing former conventional power plant sites. The initial project under consideration targets 250 megawatts (MW) of storage capacity, with ambitions to expand to an additional 500 MW in subsequent phases.
The joint venture will oversee the entire lifecycle of the projects, from development and construction to operation and maintenance. GESI Giga Batteries will handle financing and project coordination, while The Mobility House, leveraging its expertise in integrating electric vehicles into the power grid, will manage the marketing of batteries in European power and balancing energy markets.
Thomas Raffeiner, founder and CEO of The Mobility House, expressed optimism about the venture's impact on Germany's energy transition: “With the planned gigawatt-scale storage systems, we are significantly contributing to the energy transition.”
Raffeiner added, “Our expertise complements each other perfectly: industry know-how and financial strength meet many years of experience in battery storage commercialisation.”
