Infinity Power has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Cameroon West Regional Council to develop up to 4GW of renewable energy capacity by 2035, marking a significant commitment to enhance energy infrastructure in the region.
Nayer Fouad, CEO of Infinity Power, expressed optimism about the transformative impact of the initiative: “This impressive facility, which will utilize wind and solar power amongst other technologies, has the potential to transform energy provision in the area, help bolster Cameroon's economy, and deliver huge benefits to local communities.”
Under the agreement, Infinity Power, in partnership with Masdar and the Cameroon West Regional Council, will oversee the development of multiple renewable energy projects across the Western Region of Cameroon. These projects, to be implemented in phases, are expected to encompass solar, battery storage, wind, hydro, and biomass plants. The aim is to address Cameroon's growing energy demands sustainably and contribute to the country's energy security goals.
Cameroon has experienced a 27% increase in electricity consumption per capita over the past two decades, primarily relying on gas and hydro power to meet its energy needs. The new renewable energy projects are poised to diversify the energy mix, enhancing resilience and sustainability in the region.
Jules Hilaire Focka Focka, President of the Cameroon West Regional Council, underscored the strategic importance of energy generation for regional development: “During the preparation of the Western Region Strategic Development Plan, the business community requested that energy generation should be the top priority as it will stimulate industrial development.”
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) will play a crucial role in supporting the initiative by providing technical assistance, conducting feasibility studies, and developing governance frameworks for energy distribution. Vincent Kitio, Lead of Urban Energy Solutions at UN-Habitat, highlighted the transformative potential of the project: “The Western region of Cameroon has an abundant renewable energy potential exceeding 6GW… UN-Habitat welcomes this transformative energy project that will set the region toward real socio-economic development and impact the lives of over 5 million Cameroonians.”
Infinity Power, known for its operations across Egypt, Senegal, South Africa, Ghana, Mauritania, and now Cameroon, aims to significantly expand its renewable energy portfolio. The joint venture with Masdar has already achieved 1.3GW of operational capacity and targets 10GW by 2030.
