Spanish renewables firm Solarpack has successfully connected its 144-megawatt peak (MWp) La Union solar photovoltaic (PV) plant to Colombia's power grid, marking a significant step in the country's renewable energy expansion, the company announced on Wednesday.
Located in Monteria, Cordoba department, the La Union solar farm is now operational and poised to generate electricity equivalent to powering over 132,000 households annually, Solarpack confirmed.
“This milestone reinforces our commitment to support Colombia in its effort to reach its energy transition goals. Through our rapidly growing Latin America business unit, La Union consolidates our presence in Colombia and furthers Solarpack's commitment to sustainable growth in the region,” stated Leo Moreno, Global CEO of Solarpack.
The project required an investment of USD 100 million (EUR 93 million), funded in part by a loan denominated in Colombian pesos, facilitated by IDB Invest with support from Bancolombia.
La Union, along with another Solarpack solar initiative, secured 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) through Colombia's renewable energy auction held in October 2021, underscoring the project's strategic alignment with national energy diversification objectives.
