Statkraft Unveils Plans for Solar Power Ventures in Spain, Invites Local Farmers to Co-Invest

Norwegian energy giant A/S has announced its ambitious foray into 's landscape with the unveiling of two power projects in the Valencian Community. The twin ventures, named Los Predios and Los Hierros, are set to deliver a combined capacity of 154 MW, representing a significant investment exceeding EUR 120 million (USD 128.9m).

In a strategic move to foster local participation, Statkraft has extended an invitation to farmers in the region to co-invest in the projects. The company has entered into an agreement with the Valencian farmers association AVA-ASAJA, paving the way for its members to potentially hold up to a 5% stake in the projects through a jointly owned entity.

Similarly, Statkraft has offered a comparable opportunity to agricultural cooperatives in the municipality of Turis, which, along with Alborache, is set to host the solar plants.

Despite these overtures, the installation of large-scale solar farms has sparked controversy in Turis. The local government has expressed reservations about the environmental impact of such projects, noting that approvals for energy ventures exceeding 50 MW are the purview of the central government.

Statkraft has pledged to use just 18% of the total 434 hectares allocated for the projects for solar panel installations. The remainder of the land will be dedicated to practices, blending solar energy generation with eco-friendly farming methods. Additionally, 115 hectares will be earmarked for conservation efforts to enhance biodiversity in the area.

With environmental approvals in hand, Statkraft is targeting a groundbreaking ceremony for the projects in the latter half of 2025, signaling its commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions in Spain.
