European Investment Bank Grants Repsol USD 638 Million for Spanish Renewables Expansion

In a significant move towards bolstering projects in Spain, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a substantial loan of EUR 575 million (USD 638 million) for SA, an energy group, to advance their wind and solar initiatives. The will contribute to the development of projects with a combined capacity of 1.1 GW, which are set to play a crucial role in Spain's renewable energy landscape.

The financing agreement, inked between Repsol and the EIB on Tuesday, paves the way for an initial tranche of EUR 400 million to be allocated to Repsol. The envisaged facilities are anticipated to be connected to the by the end of 2025, with an estimated electricity output sufficient to meet the annual needs of approximately 645,000 Spanish households. Moreover, these projects are projected to make significant strides in curbing greenhouse gas emissions by over 800,000 tonnes annually, contributing to the fight against climate change.

The CEO of Repsol, Josu Jon Imaz, underscored the strategic significance of the EIB's support, as it aligns with the company's ambitious targets. Repsol aspires to achieve 6 GW of installed capacity by 2025 and an impressive 20 GW by 2030, showcasing their commitment to transitioning towards greener energy solutions. Additionally, the company has committed to becoming a net-zero emissions entity by 2050, further solidifying its position as a sustainability-driven player in the energy sector.

Repsol's commitment to renewable energy is already evident in its operational portfolio, which boasts an impressive 1.9 GW of renewable energy plants, primarily concentrated in Spain. However, the company's ambitions extend beyond the nation's borders, as it also has projects in various stages of development in the United States, Chile, , and Italy.

This latest financing development comes on the heels of Repsol's agreement with the EIB in December, which secured a EUR 120 million loan for the construction of an advanced biofuels production plant in Spain. The combination of these two substantial financial injections reflects Repsol's unwavering dedication to driving the energy transition and fostering sustainable practices in the sector.
