Enel X, a subsidiary of Enel Group, has been granted a lucrative tender by Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) to construct a groundbreaking 22MW solar plant. This state-of-the-art facility aims to fulfill the airport's self-consumption requirements and will be developed in partnership with infrastructure company Circet.
Situated parallel to runway No.3 at Rome's renowned Leonardo da Vinci Airport, the solar plant will span an impressive 340,000 square meters. The project is scheduled to commence by the end of 2023 and reach completion in 2024.

What sets this solar energy plant apart is its innovative storage system, which relies on second life electric vehicle batteries. The Pioneer (airPort sustaInability secONd lifE battEry stoRage) initiative, a collaborative effort between Enel X and ADR, has yielded a 10MWh storage system. This cutting-edge solution will effectively address any potential energy demand peaks experienced by the airport during evenings.
Francesco Venturini, the CEO of Enel X, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The construction of this new photovoltaic system, which will be the largest in Europe, is a significant step in the now well-established collaboration with Aeroporti di Roma.”
Marco Troncone, the CEO of ADR, echoed Venturini's sentiments, emphasizing the magnitude of the project, saying, “Working with Enel X will make it possible for the largest self-consumption photovoltaic system ever installed at a European airport. We believe that Italy's top companies can and must work together to transform and revitalize this sector, which is of strategic importance for our country, and to help mitigate climate change.”
