Semco Maritime and Hyme Energy Collaborate on Long-Duration Energy Storage Project in Denmark

, a global engineering and project management company, and , a Danish clean energy start-up, have joined forces to launch a cutting-edge long-duration energy storage project in Esbjerg, Denmark. Hyme Energy awarded Semco Maritime the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the provision of services for the (MOSS) project.

The innovative MOSS project aims to establish an energy storage demonstration plant in Esbjerg, using proprietary corrosion control technology and deploying molten hydroxide salts. The excess energy from solar and wind farms will be stored as heat in 700 degrees molten hydroxide salt at Hyme Energy's long-duration thermal energy storage facilities. This heat can be used to supply inexpensive power and heat for up to two weeks later when required.

The engineering phase of the MOSS project is due to be completed in the second quarter, with the installation phase scheduled to conclude in the fourth quarter of 2023. The partners have also agreed to explore opportunities to collaborate on Hyme's future larger projects, where its long-duration thermal energy storage solution will enable utilities and industries to decarbonize heat and power generation.
