The RFS Power Coalition, a group comprising stakeholders from a variety of renewable energy sources, has expressed its support for the inclusion of renewable electricity in the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) in a letter submitted to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The coalition has also urged the EPA to create a national eRINs (electronic renewable identification numbers) program as part of the final SET (Strengthening Transparency in Regulatory Science) rule that the agency is currently considering. The letter was prompted by reports of a delay in the creation of the program from sources within the administration.
According to the letter, the RFS Power Coalition believes that the eRINs program is crucial to incentivizing growth among renewable electricity providers to meet the rapidly increasing demand for clean energy in the coming years. The coalition argues that the program will help convert materials that would otherwise degrade and emit harmful greenhouse gases into clean, renewable energy, including electricity.
The letter was signed by Patrick Serfass, Executive Director of the American Biogas Council, and Carrie Annand, Executive Director of the Biomass Power Association. The two organizations represent a broad range of stakeholders in the biogas and biomass power sectors and their respective supply chains.
While the RFS Power Coalition is not privy to the EPA's deliberations, its members believe that the creation of a national eRINs program must be a priority. The program will not only help to reduce emissions and promote clean energy but also support the growth of the renewable energy industry, creating jobs and economic opportunities across the country.
